Your dog needs you to guide them

You and your dog are a team and we are dog teachers, human instructors and team coaches. Dogs aren’t computers or robots. They are a lot like us; living, sentient beings, that have good days, bad days, sick days, occasional strokes of genius, and frequent bouts of stupidity.

OBJECTIVES:

If your schedule does not allow you to complete one of our courses, we offer individual private lessons at a mutually convenient time, either at your home or at our training grounds.

Private Lessons teach the owners/handlers how to have control of their dog and enables the dog to be responsive to voice commands and hand signals. The lessons are one-to-one with an Instructor and therefore can be tailored and designed to meet the owners’ individual needs.

Time is spent on how to properly communicate with you dog, general obedience exercises such as loose lead walking, walking at heel, sit, drop/lay down, stay, coming when called, general good practices to adopt with your dog such as teaching the dog place/on your bed, sit wait at the front door, conditioning exercises with the dog to ensure they don’t become food/toy aggressive and lots more. Time is also spent on problem solving with issues such as jumping on visitors, chewing furniture & biting/mouthing to name just a few

Class Notes are distributed at the end of each lesson to consolidate what has been learnt in the lessons to help the handler with practice and also to brief up the family/house-hold and what the dog is learning.

Expectant Parents Preparation

IN YOUR HOME
1 hour visit
Before your new baby arrives
All family/house-hold members are encouraged to participate.

You’re pregnant. Congratulations! You are about to become a parent again! (Your fur baby totally counts – he/she is the older and wiser sibling, right?)
Amongst the excitement, nerves, fear, doctors appointments, baby brain, and other stresses like moving, shopping, and preparing to take time off of work it’s easy to forget that this is a big change for your dog too. Your pup might not have polished manners, and may not know what to do with the baby toys that look like dog toys! New parents might not know where to begin with dog/baby introductions. That’s where D.O.G.S. of Vic. Expectant Parents Preparation can help to prepare both you and the dog!

This is Private Training held in your home, with your dog(s). We will discuss training your dog to go to a “place” (bed, crate or a room),
training what rooms and/or furniture are now “off limits”, prevention of dangers at baby belly time, desensitise dog to baby sounds, movements & baby equipment (swings, walkers, strollers, etc.). We consider car travel safety for dog and baby & can discuss dealing with any existing problematic obsessive licking or barking behaviours. Teach you how to introduce the baby to your dog & training basic commands and manners (sit, down, come, stay, leave it, off)

You may require some extra Private Training Sessions depending on the needs and experiences of the dog and household.

We usually recommend contacting us around the second trimester to give you time to implement any training and changes, but it can begin earlier or later.

“My dog IS the baby. Can she be taught to accept my infant?”

Dogs are pack animals. They are designed to accept new members without much fuss. However, like all animals, they deserve instruction on just how to do that. Giving your dog training is a gift you give to help him/her be a successful pack member!

The advantage of Private 1-2-1 Training is that it is fully customised for you and YOUR dog. We are committed to working with you until you reach your training goals, but the key component to any training success is your commitment and follow through with the training program. We are here to support and help you achieve your goals. However, to get the most from your training program, it’s important that you see it through. You will need to make some time after the lessons to reinforce the training.
